Gitmo is a six-year-old female Yorkshire Terrier/Toy
or Miniature Poodle breed (YorkiePoo for short) that is the pride and
joy of Olive Collins. Folks from around Havana will remember Olive
Collins as the wonderful pharmacist and owner of the Main Street Drug in
Havana.
Back on May 31st, Olive Collins brought Gitmo to Winter Animal
Hospital after the dog had been savagely attacked and/or struck by a car
(no one is still really sure). She had been cut from just below her ear,
all the around her neck. Dr. Tera Ward Winters was on duty that Saturday
morning, and with the able assistance of Vet Technician Shannon
Schiller, managed to sedate Gitmo, sew her up and insert drain tubes.
All seemed well after that, and Gitmo was on the way to recovery when
Olive Collins brought Gitmo back to the Winter Animal Hospital on June
9th as the dog was having trouble breathing. After a series of x-rays
and further examination, Dr. Tera Winters determined that Gitmo had a
traumatic diaphragmatic hernia and some broken ribs as a result of the
earlier incident.
Dr. Tera Winters and Dr. Greg Winter operated on Gitmo with Shannon
assisting. On July 10th, the stitches were removed, and as noted above
and in the pictures, Gitmo is on the road (no pun intended) to a full
recovery.
Olive Collins thanks Dr. Tera Winters and Dr. Greg Winter and Shannon
Schiller for the wonderful care they have given to Gitmo. Gitmo is
living proof of the wonderful care all animals receive at the Winter
Animal Hospital. So say Gitmo and Olive Collins, and so say the rest of
us that get to experience that care on a daily basis.
Gitmo Collins, truly deserving to be Winter Animal Hospital pet of
the month!
